Biomass - wood fuelled heating

Opting for a carbon neutral form of energy such as biomass has huge advantages for you and the environment. Installing a wood pellet boiler could help you save a massive 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year when installed into an electrically heated home. In terms of what's in your wallet that could amount to a saving of around £470 on your energy bills.

Biomass falls into two main categories:

  • Woody biomass: Forest products, untreated woods, energy crops and quick growing trees like willow.
  • Non-woody biomass: Animal waste, industrial and biodegradable municipal products from food processing and high energy crops such as maize and sugar cane.

Don't worry, this doesn't mean you have to spend your evenings shovelling cow dung into a burner or wielding an axe at your garden shed.  For domestic applications of biomass, the fuel usually takes the form of wood pellets, wood chips or wood logs, all of which should be available to you locally.

Being able to source your biomass fuel locally is key to maximising the cost effectiveness and sustainability. You'll be doing your bit for the environment by using renewable energy and minimising transport miles.  And you'll be directly investing into local businesses and employment too. Better for everyone.
